David’s setup for Next to Normal at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts in La Mirada, California.

“In the percussion department, what you see in this picture is a 29" Ludwig Universal timpani, an old conga (quinto), beautiful Deagan 580 Traveller Vibraharp, Meinl Artist Series Luis Conte Live Shaker, Miller Triangle Machine, Miller Finger Cymbal Machine, Yamaha 1210 Professional Glockenspiel, Remo 14" Djembe, RhythmTech Brass Jingle Tambourine and an LP Jam Block.

For this show I am using Pearl drums. The toms are 10x10, 12x10, 14x12. The bass drum is 22x16. The snare is a Ludwig 14x6 1/2 chrome over brass.

The cymbals are 14" Bosphorus Gold Hi-Hats, 9" Bosphorus Traditional Splash, 16" Bosphorus Gold Fast Crash, 21" Sabian HHX Groove Ride, and a 16" Paiste Signature Series Fast Crash.

Next to Normal is a percussionist's dream gig. The drum book actually makes references to playing certain grooves ‘a la Gadd’, need I say more?

You have everything from beautiful vibes, to delicate glock, to driving hand percussion, to hard rock drums!
It's one of those shows you never tire of playing and just can't wait to play it again.

This ain't no Oklahoma!!!!

p.s. I would like to thank Damien Bassman, Jon Berger, Billy Miller, Jeff Snider and Jared Schonig for taking the time to answer my questions and offer their words of wisdom in preparing for this show.”
