How The Grinch Stole Christmas - Dave Roth

Dave’s setup for the cast album of Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical.

“We recorded The Grinch this past August 2013 at the historical Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom in New York City. It was an aesthetically amazing recording session. Not only is the ballroom beautiful but it has also played host to a who’s who of recording artists and orchestras over the years. In 1926, Warner Brothers chose to set up the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system in The Grand Ballroom to capture the 107-piece New York Philharmonic orchestra for the film Don Juan which marked the release of the inaugural commercial film featuring a recorded musical soundtrack.

It was a very unique experience in that the entire 14 piece band was in the same room with no baffling. This made the process a little more organic but also created other challenges. Unlike most sessions we didn't have the ability to adjust our own levels to choose what we would like to hear. Unfortunately, I played a very heavy mallet orchestrated book without hearing a single note from the woodwinds. That was interesting and challenging!”

The cast album of Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is being released today!

Dave is a proud endorser of Yamaha Percussion and Vic Firth sticks and mallets. This Winter he will be playing for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and A Christmas Story, The Musical at Madison Square Garden.
